Zuckerberg and Facebook

Most people know of the popular movie “The Social Network” filmed in 2010, where the story of how the popular social networking site, Facebook, got its original start-up is told. Most people have seen how Mark Zuckerberg, an intelligent young man aided in creating Facebook, was later sued by two brothers that claimed he stole their idea, and squeezed his best friend out of the business they created together. But these details, true or not, were made into a Hollywood film and thrown on a big screen for us to marvel at. What I want to know, is how that business is doing now? Is Zuckerberg still involved? What kind of leader and CEO is he? How does he manage his business?

Being a business management major and seeking to advance my career into management, I’m interested in what makes a successful manager and how they manage their employees and the business environment. The above video is interesting to see what exactly Zuckerberg looks for in his employees, and I would have to completely agree with his logic. According to that video, the Facebook CEO focuses on two things while hiring potential employees.

1. Raw intelligence and the ability to learn about the company and its operations.

2. Willingness to sell out and be passionate about the company and its direction.

One additional thing that really jumped out to me was when Mark discussed experience in employees. He said if a potential employee has 10 years experience, but no passion to learn and work hard in the company, then they are really not worth much to the company. On the contrary, a job seeker with no experience, but a passion for the company and a solid work ethic could have the potential to be a great employee. These types of employee are integral to Facebook’s success.

Zuckerberg attributes Facebook’s success to three things:

1) Quick thinking, quick working employees.

2) Emphasizing bold decisions and creating bold products.

3) Focusing on leverage and impact.

These three ideas and values are dear to Zuckerberg, and he instills them into his company and employees. Thinking and working quick gets things done. Making bold and confident decisions shows employees who the boss is. Simple and clear. This is what we’re successful doing, now let’s not only do it precisely, but continue to make it better. Finally, make an impact. Be important. Do something big!

According to an article published by Dan Noyes this month (February 2015) at https://zephoria.com/social-media/top-15-valuable-facebook-statistics/  Facebook see’s a 13 percent increase in users’ year to year, and there are currently 1.39 billion monthly active users. Five new profiles are created every second. The most relevant statistic to me is that 42% of marketers report that Facebook is critical or important to their business.

I think it’s safe to say that Zuckerberg and Facebook is doing something right, and shows no sign of slowing down.
